Tracking IMO amendments and effective dates
For ship operators and service teams, a regulation update is most useful when its status, effective date and vessel-specific application are clear.

The IMO publishes schedules of amendments to its instruments, including expected entry-into-force or effective dates. Use the official schedule to identify relevant updates, then confirm the vessel-specific requirements with the flag Administration, class society or appropriate technical specialist.
Separate three kinds of status
- Adopted: the relevant IMO body has approved or adopted an amendment.
- In force or effective: the date when the provision becomes applicable under the relevant instrument and conditions.
- Proposed or under consideration: development work is ongoing; a proposal is not automatically a current requirement.
Check the instrument and date
As of this review date, the IMO schedule lists several amendments with 2026 dates, including amendments to SOLAS chapter II-2 related to fuel flashpoint declarations before bunkering, and amendments to other instruments with dates during 2026. Exact applicability depends on the instrument, ship type, flag and circumstances; use the current IMO entry and the relevant Administration's guidance.
Follow the primary source
Before publishing or acting on a regulatory update, check the IMO amendment schedule and the underlying resolution or convention text. Check relevant flag-state circulars and class guidance for implementation details. Record the date you reviewed the source because schedules may be updated.
Keep technical work tied to confirmed requirements
Where a change affects equipment, service or documentation, confirm the applicable requirement and scope before arranging work. NexTide Marine can review a service or spares enquiry against the information provided and coordinate appropriate options, subject to the relevant approvals and provider capability.
